Welcome To Hawthorne Academy. At Hawthorne we strive every day in every way to glorify our Lord Jesus Christ. We appreciate your interest in our school and would love to have the opportunity to show you around and answer any questions you may have. Click on the button below to contact us. You can also call, text, email, or send us a Facebook message; we'd love to hear from you.
Our founding organization, Overseas United Education Foundation Inc. (OUEF), was established in 2013 with the goal of founding a school for students from the USA and China, as well as other countries to study and learn together. The board members of OUEF are Chinese Christians and Hawthorne's little chapel building was a key element in their decision to choose this particular campus. There have been multiple obstacles along the way, but God has graciously answered prayers and now Hawthorne Academy is a fully NH licensed private Christian high school. We are so thankful for the many answered prayers.
What do we have to offer? Christ- based quality education with fantastic teachers in a safe rural area. We are small-- this allows us to truly meet the needs of your child. We offer courses in computer science, computer programming, and Mandarin as well as English, Literature, Music, Art, high school level math , science and history courses We offer the opportunity for students to participate in our after-school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), and Drama club. We share chapel time together and pray for each other, as well as for the students in China who are waiting to attend our school. This is the learning environment we can offer your child.
At this time we are in the process to obtain the necessary licensing to enroll international students. Do you want your child to know and care about the needs of people in others countries? Do you want to have a high school that will prepare them for whatever God has planned for them? Do you want them to be missionaries to other countries-- even while living in NH?
I'd like to invite you to be a part of our Hawthorne family, whether by having your child attend or by holding our school in prayer. Thank you for taking the time to visit our site. May God Bless Your Family.
Striving for wisdom,
Growing in knowledge,
Preparing to serve the world for God's glory.

Dear Friends,
It is with excitement and pride that we welcome your interest in Hawthorne Academy, a school for grades 9 through 12. With your involvement and assistance, our new school will quickly become a beautiful blossom in the New England educational garden. Our desire is to established an enviable reputation, centered on Christian standards, academic excellence, internationalism, leadership, responsibility, service to others, and outstanding pastoral provision.
By choosing to send your child(ren) to Hawthorne Academy, you have made a commitment to the academy. In order to realize our aims as a school, and more particularly those for your child(ren), we require your full support. Education for all age groups is, in reality, a partnership between staff, students and parents, whereby the learning processes initiated at school are maintained, indeed encouraged, at home. A great part of education is about developing the right work values and practices, and this is where parents can play a crucial, if not definitive, role. Good habits at home will inevitably be translated into good habits at school.
I hope that you will take the opportunity to visit us and to see why this is the right place for your son or daughter. We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to our school.
Best wishes,
Board of Trustees

Hello, my name is Barbara Berwick and I am blessed to be working at Hawthorne Academy, currently as a teacher and nurse. I have worked as a registered nurse for many years, both in Arizona and New Hampshire, where I’ve served in diverse environments ranging from Native American health care, to specialized rehab, to school nursing and to home health care/hospice.
In addition to my nursing career, I’ve also spent 25 years a teacher, homeschooling all three of my children and now working at Hawthorne.
I am privileged to combine my teaching and nursing experience here at Hawthorne Academy. My greatest desire in life is to be faithful to my Lord Jesus Christ and to do His will. And I know God has great things in store for our school!

Hello, my name is David Matteson and I recently have had the privilege of being called to serve at Hawthorne Academy as its Principal. I graduated Summa Cum Laude as a History Major from Southern New Hampshire University with a concentration in American History. After serving as Hawthorne Academy's History teacher, I was inspired to continue to develop a school that prepared students for future academic endeavors. My goal is to provide a well rounded education and environment that is enriching, challenging, and loving for our students. In doing so, we can mold life-long learners who promote the Kingdom of Christ.
My passion is in U.S. history and I believe that it is important to protect our American traditions and ideals. This can only be achieved through education and the preservation of the framework set forth by our founding fathers, and the Herculean task God placed before them. I believe that all people can appreciate and understand the freedoms we hold so dearly by studying our past. “Educate and inform the whole mass of the people…. they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.” – Thomas Jefferson

Dr. Peggy LaBrosse, began her formal teaching career in 1976 and has
contributed to a variety of public and private settings, including traditional and
alternative schools. While strongly focused on academic content, her first concern has
always been the physical, emotional, social and spiritual safety and well-being of her
students. This stems from her experience that lack of a safe and secure environment -
whether at home, in their social lives or in the classroom - adds to students’ cognitive
load, reducing their capacity to take in and retain new learning. Operating under the
rubric “no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care,” Peggy
develops a classroom environment of respect and care. She makes her expectations of
the students and what they can expect from her clear from the outset, all the while
giving them freedom with responsibility.
Drawing on an arsenal of instructional strategies that includes curriculum design,
literacy coaching and assessment methods, Peggy passionately delivers subject matter
in various ways, addressing the needs of different learning styles - from the visual and
auditory to the tactile and kinesthetic. This approach encourages students to engage in
the subject matter through “big ideas” and essential questions, rather than relying on
rote memorization, by learning how to learn. This came as a result of her doctoral
program, which radically transformed her teaching practice from one centered on
standard content to one centered on understanding alternative conceptions and how to
dispel misconceptions in science.

Scarborough Hall is one of two dormitories at Hawthorne. Currently, classes take place on the first floor while 44 rooms are available for boarding students on the 2nd and 3rd floor.

Peabody Hall is the 2nd dormitory building building on campus. Eventually this dorm will be for our female students.

Hawthorne has a college-sized gymnasium. Attached to the front of the gymnasium is our classroom building.

Our little chapel building was built in 1877. It is one of the oldest church buildings in NH. The chapel has a new roof, but still needs some significant work to bring it back to its glory. It is the hope of all associated with Hawthorne to see this Chapel fully restored.

The brick portion of this home was built in 1817. The President's House functions as home for our Executive Trustee and his family

The Matteson House is a historic farmhouse located on the Hawthorne Academy campus, serving as both a cherished landmark and the residence of the Principal. Its farmhouse architecture reflects the Academy’s commitment to heritage and community roots, while its location within walking distance of classrooms and student spaces symbolizes the Principal’s close presence in daily school life. More than just a home, the Matteson House represents stewardship, hospitality, and the Academy’s vision of education grounded in both history and future growth. As a living legacy, it reminds students and staff that learning is not only about academics but also about cultivating values of care, belonging, and spiritual stewardship, with leadership woven into the fabric of everyday campus life.
